Lymphedema Program
The University Community Hospital Lymphedema program effectively treats and manages lymphedema through manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), compression, exercise and skin care. Manual lymphatic drainage uses a gentle, massage-like technique to stimulate the lymphatic vessels to move lymph fluid. Compression involves the use of specialized bandages and garments to promote lymphatic flow, and prevent fluid from re-accumulating in the extremity.

Exercise maximizes the effect of compression by stimulating the lymphatic system to move lymph fluid away from the skin.  Lymphedema causes skin changes, which can result in infection.  Patients are educated patients in self-care techniques, management of the condition, and preventative measures. Also, training is provided to the patient on sign and symptoms, appropriate skin care, and community resources.

Goals of the program include: drain fluid from congested regions to healthy lymph node sites, restore and retain function of affected limb(s), prevent and control recurrent episodes and infections, and education on disease management.
